The invention relates to a drive system (1) for controlling the movement of a moveable contact of a switching device for an electrical transmission or distribution system. The drive system comprises:
- an AC motor (5) for moving said moveable contact;
- a power converter (10);
- a capacitor-based energy storage unit (11); and
- a control unit (12) adapted to control the power converter so as to thereby control the operation of the motor. The control unit is arranged to receive information as to a voltage value representing the output voltage of the energy storage unit or the input voltage of the power converter and adapted to adjust, directly or indirectly, a direct-axis current component of the motor current in dependence on said voltage value so as to thereby control field weakening of the motor in dependence on said voltage value. The invention also relates to a switching device comprising such a drive system.
