A method and an apparatus for searching for a composite broadcast channel are provided to perform a broadcast channel scanning operation on only a frequency band of a CATV(Cable Television) broadcast signal or a terrestrial broadcast signal, thereby reducing the broadcast channel search time and the user standby time. It is checked whether there broadcast channels are present in a frequency band of 120-174 MHz within a broadcast signal received from a head end or a broadcasting station(S102). If the broadcast channels are present in the frequency band of 120-174 MHz, a CATV(Cable Television) channel scanning operation is performed on a frequency band of 54-750 MHz to search for only broadcast channels containing CATV broadcast information(S103). If the broadcast channels are not present in the frequency band of 120-174 MHz, a terrestrial broadcast channel scanning operation is performed on a frequency band of 54-752 MHz to search for only broadcast channels containing terrestrial broadcast channel information(S105).
