Disclosed is the use of a compound selected from formulae (V), (VI), (VII) and (IX), wherein the substituents are as defined in the specification, in the manufacture of a medicament for increasing the sensitivity of cancer cells or a tumour to a chemotherapeutic agent. Also disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula (V), (VI), (VII) or (IX) and a chemotherapeutic agent. Also disclosed is a platinum complex of formula (II) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein at least one of RA, RB, RC and RD is XRE where RE is a compound represented by the general formula (V), (VI), (VII) or (IX), or is derived from or is a radical or ion of the compound of formula (V), (VI), (VII) or (IX), and ligates to the platinum through any one or more of the oxygen heteroatoms, or a radical of the heteroatoms defined as part of RE or alternatively by a double bond on the compound of formula (V), (VI), (VII) or (IX); and the remaining substituents are as defined in the specification.
