An electrolyte for a lithium ion rechargeable battery is provided to improve cycle life characteristics of a lithium secondary battery and enhance low-temperature discharge characteristics. An electrolyte for a lithium ion rechargeable battery includes a non-aqueous organic solvent, a lithium salt, and a halogenated ethylene carbonate and a dihalogenated ethylene carbonate. The dihalogenated ethylene carbonate is added in an amount of 0.01-2wt% of the non-aqueous organic solvent and is a difluoroethylene carbonate. The halogenated ethylene carbonate is contained in an amount of 0.1-10wt% of the non-aqueous organic solvent and is a fluoroethylene carbonate.
