An epicyclic gear system with reduced noise, for particular application in wind turbines, is disclosed. The system has a sun gear, a ring gear, and P planet gears located in a casing, with load equalisation means on the planet gears. The K-factor of the system is defined as K = modulus[hNs/P] where h is the number of the harmonic of gear mesh frequency potentially being excited and Ns is the number of teeth on the sun gear. The system must satisfy P > 3 and 1 < K < P-1.
