<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of controlling an engine capable of enhancing the robustness and reproducibility of transition while suppressing the occurrence of defects during the transition in operation modes between an SI mode and an HCCI mode. <P>SOLUTION: During the transition from a spark ignition (SI) mode to a premixed compression ignition (HCCI) mode, an engine is operated with a predetermined overlap between the opening period of an intake valve 52 and an opening period of an exhaust valve 54 in the SI mode before the transition. The overlap is changed over to a negative overlap according to the request of transition, and the opening timing and the closing timing of the intake valve 52 are retarded by different amounts, respectively, and the ignition timing is retarded.
