PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyramide by nitrile-hydratase (enzyme having the activity of hydrating nitrile compounds) which can complete a reaction in a short time and will not require a large amount of the enzyme. SOLUTION: The method for producing 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyramide comprises preheating a 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile and bringing the heat-treated 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile into contact with the nitrile-hydratase, and in which the 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile and the 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyramide are optically active.
