The resistance sources offered by fitness machines are either heavy, bulky or do not offer a variable, constant and precise resistance. In the present invention, a lightweight and compact machine that also offers resistance plateaus allows the user to select a desired resistance by engaging or disengaging one or more of the resistance sources, which may be compression, extension or torsion springs; or flexible rods; or extensible belts. The resistance is transmitted to a strap by a system of gears. The strap is wound up inside the machine and the user has access to one of its ends. The differing diameters of the gears reduce the many turns of the part on which the strap is wound, to a fraction of a revolution of the last gears, which last turn gears are connected to their own resistance source and create a constant and precise resistance.
