PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and industrially applicable process for the recovery of high-purity cholanic acid, in particular chenodeoxycholic acid and hyodeoxycholic acid, from swine bile as a raw material, in a highly pure form which makes them suited as pharmaceutically effective principles and as an intermediate for the preparation of other pharmaceutically effective principles such as ursodeoxycholic acid. SOLUTION: The process comprises (a) hydrolysis of the swine bile with an alkali hydroxide, (b) recovery of a crude mixture of cholanic acid salts by continuous extraction at a controlled pH, (c) separation thereof by chromatography and (d) recovery of the acids in the purified form.
