PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for the production of a trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-formylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid ester. SOLUTION: The method for producing a trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-formylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid ester comprises the reaction of a trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-(acyloxymethyl)cyclopropanecarboxylic acid ester or a mixture of the trans isomer and the cis isomer of the ester with at least one kind of alkali metal compound selected from alkali metal hydroxide, alkali metal carbonate and alkali metal alcoholate, the oxidization reaction of the obtained reaction mixture, the treatment of the obtained reaction mixture with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal bisulfite and the treatment of the obtained water-layer with a base or a water-soluble aldehyde.
