Improvements in safety guards for rag-tearing and like machines

Class 80 (4) A rectangular guard 1 of mesh or other form is pivotally suspended over the feed apron 3 of a rag-tearing or like machine, parallel with the feed rollers 4, and co-operates with a limit switch 11 controlling the rollers and/or the swift. The guard 1 is pivoted at 9 to a pair of links 5 which are pivoted to pillars 6 removably or fixedly carried by brackets 7. The brackets may be adjustable on the machine frame and the pillars may be adjusted in the brackets. The links 5 rest on stops 8 so that the guard may have a swinging or rising movement. If the guard is moved more than a predetermined amount the switch 11 is operated by a projection on the guard or by a swinging lever 13 whose pivot is linked to the guard. If an independent feed roller motor is employed the switch 11 may switch it off, reverse it or operate a clutch, and if the motor is reversed it may be aranged to be switched off after a predetermined period. If the rollers are driven from the swift drive the switch 11 may open a clutch and/or switch off the swift motor. Braking means for the rollers and/or swift may be provided. In a modification, a guard 1a, Fig. 4, comprises a grid of curved rods pivoted about a fixed axis, and the pivot 14 is linked to a lever 16 operating a limit switch when the guard is pushed towards the feed rollers.
