<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-service terminal device having a card reader. <P>SOLUTION: This card reader is provided with a card receiving means 14 for receiving a card having stored data to be read, and a card reading means 12 for reading the stored data. The reader is arranged to distribute the card received in the card receiving means 14 to the card reading means via a distribution route. The route 30 is arranged to maintain the card within a prescribed plane during conveyance. A signal source 28 is arranged to generate an output signal 26 projected across the distribution route 30 within the plane with the card passed therethrough during use.
