PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically reconstruct a management file by sensing a change in a management target file organization and a change of a management target file in a recording medium. SOLUTION: An image reproducer has a file specifying function for specifying a manageable file by searching directories and file organizations in a recording medium, and a management file generation function for generating a management file including attribute information of the specified file on an entry and attribute information described in the file and for storing the management file in the recording medium. The image reproducer determines the reliability of the management file if a management file is stored in the recording medium, and reconstructs the management file using the management file generation function if it determines that the file is not reliable. Then the image reproducer retrieves an image in the recording medium using the management file recorded in the recording medium if it determines that the file is reliable, and if not, using the reconstructed management file.
