PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focusing apparatus capable of appropriate focusing on a target object. SOLUTION: The focusing apparatus includes: a first focus detecting means 2 for detecting an image corresponding to a focus detection area set in an image plane by an optical system 1 and detecting a quantity of defocus of the optical system 1; a second focus detecting means 6 for detecting a focus evaluation value for the optical system 1 from the contrast information of an image obtained by the optical system 1; a first dividing means 4 by which the detection range of the first focus detecting means 2 corresponding to the focus detection area is divided into a plurality of first blocks; a second dividing means 6 by which the detection range of the second focus detecting means 6 corresponding to the focus detection area is divided into a plurality of second blocks; and a control means 8 for controlling the focus of the optical system 1 based on the quantity of defocus detected from at least one of the plurality of first blocks and the focus evaluation value detected from at least one of the plurality of second blocks.
