The device has a pair of clamping jaws (1a, 1b) loaded with a clamping force by a clamping device, whose size is reproducibly adjustable. Cloth-like materials (10) in form of a laminar structure are arranged between the jaws. A traction force of a traction device is measured by a measuring device e.g. manometer (4). An end of a flat tension rod (8) projects between the clamping jaws, and another end of the rod is fastened to the traction device. The materials are arranged between one of the jaws and a flat side of the rod and between the other jaw and another flat side of the rod. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining clamping force of a cloth-like material.
