PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stroke characteristic variable engine capable of improving sufficient durability and reliability around a control link without bringing increase of weight of the engine. SOLUTION: In the stroke characteristic variable engine formed by connecting a piston 3 and a crankshaft 6 by a plurality of links 4, 5 and 12, link geometry is set so that relationship between a distanceΔD between a point D and a point A on L axis in X axis direction and a distanceΔB between a point B and the point A on the L axis in the X axis direction isΔD<ΔB in all rotation regions of the crankshaft when a direction parallel to a center axis Y of a cylinder 2 is the L axis, a direction perpendicular to the center axis Y of the cylinder 2 and the L axis is X axis, a center of a crank pin is A, a connection center of the second link and the control link is B, and a connection center of the first link and the second link is D.
