PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ALKYLENE CARBONATES

An aqueous process for preparing alkylene carbonates from alkenes and car bon dioxide is described herein. The process comprises the reaction of alken es with a bromine source, a base and carbon dioxide. The aqueous process can be rendered catalytic by using an oxidant capable of in situ conversion of bromide into bromine.
