摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup apparatus where aperture control is performed smoothly without regard to environmental temperature by providing a temperature compensation function to a liquid crystal optical element for performing aperture control of incident light. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element 100 comprises a first substrate, a second substrate, liquid crystal 106 insert-held between the first and second substrates, transparent electrode patterns 200 and 300 being electrodes for aperture control formed on the first substrate and arranged in an aperture control area 211, and a counter electrode formed on the second substrate for applying voltage between the electrodes for aperture control and itself. A liquid crystal control means 40 for driving the liquid crystal optical element 100 is provided with a temperature compensation means which is for compensating the temperature of the liquid crystal optical element 100 and which is composed of a thermistor 42a.
