PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect smoke by a simple configuration. SOLUTION: When light of the flash lamp 38 in a flash fixing device 30 is emitted, flash is emitted to a recording medium P. The light emitted to the recording medium P hits smoke emitted from the recording medium P and scatters. The scattered light enters a light receiving part 54, and the light receiving part 54 receives the light. A processing device 58 captures, from the light receiving part 54, a light quantity signal of light received by the light receiving part 54. When the value of the light quantity signal reaches a predetermined reference value, it is determined that smoke has been emitted by the recording medium P. Using flash emitted from the flash lamp 38, the occurrence of smoke is determined in such a manner.
