PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic unit number control device and its method, for surely preventing simultaneous start, and easiness in setting time of a timer. SOLUTION: This automatic unit number control device is composed of a level gauge 3 detecting a water level of a water tank, an operation unit number determining part 4 determining the operation unit number among a plurality of pumps 2 by its measured value and an operation command part 5 sending a command to the pumps by the operation unit number determining part, and is provided with an operation command timer 7 having the function of preventing the pumps from being simultaneously started and arranged in the operation command part and a starting state detecting part 6 detecting a starting time state signal until any of the plurality of pumps complete starting after beginning the starting, and performs processing in a procedure of stopping and resetting the operation command time of the other pump each time when any pump is started.
