Method of filling a fuel tank (1) of a motor vehicle (10) by means of a nozzle (23) connected by a distribution unit (22) to a fuel source (21), the method comprising the steps of: connecting the nozzle to the tank and activating the distribution unit to begin the filling; establishing a link between a management unit (3) of the vehicle and a fill detector (4) to prevent the motor from starting when it is detected that filling is in progress.
