The hot water tank (1) has a temperature sensor (4) within it and a second temperature sensor (5) is at the hot water take-off pipe (3). The water temperature is measured continuously or at intervals. Fresh water is fed into the tank when the measured water temperature in the tank drops below a threshold and when the temperature gradient at the water pipe sensor breaches a threshold value.
