The present invention relates to a backup instrument fitted to the instru ment panel of an aircraft to detect overload. The backup instrument comprise s means for calculating and displaying flight information on the basis of da ta supplied by associated sensors (41, 42, 43, 45) incorporated into a backu p system. It also comprises a module (403) that detects that the aircraft is overloaded on the basis of the data supplied to display the flight informat ion. The invention applies in particular to the detection of overload during heavy landings. More generally, it applies to the detection and display of overloading of an aircraft in various types of environment.
