<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochemical element for NO<SB>x</SB>decomposition efficiently electrolyzing NO<SB>x</SB>even in an oxygen atmosphere with reduced power consumption. <P>SOLUTION: This electrochemical element 1 for NO<SB>x</SB>decomposition has a substrate 11 consisting of a solid electrolyte, and a pair of electrodes formed on both faces of the substrate 11. One electrode 13 of electrodes is a NO<SB>x</SB>decomposition electrode 13 provided with a first layer 13a consisting of an electronic conductive substance formed on the substrate 11, and a second layer 13b consisting of zirconia solid solution formed on the first layer 13a.
