<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the risk of careless or undesirable piercing by a contaminated piercing member. <P>SOLUTION: A safety shield is provided with a piercing member 22, a housing 44, and a clip 28 which is oriented in the transverse axis direction to the piercing member and includes a plate defining a cavity. The plate defining a cavity is movable around the longitudinal axis of the piercing member, and the surface of the plate for defining the cavity is engaged with the piercing member to stop the sliding movement. The clip includes a first leg having proximal and distal parts. The distal part defines the cavity to be engaged with a medical device 38. The clip also includes a second leg having proximal and distal parts. The distal part of the second leg includes a bearing surface to be engaged with the piercing member. The leg portion is biased and elastically pressed in the converging direction.
