PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an S/N ratio while securing a practical size. SOLUTION: A row signal readout means 110 reads an image signal out of J pixels, belonging to a selected row of a solid-state imaging element 100 having pixels P arrayed in I rows and J columns, onto J column-directional signal lines L. A prestage A/D converter 131 performs rough A/D conversion for each column to output an (n)-bit digital value and also output a fraction component as an analog residue signal after amplification. A column selector 134 reads signals out by the columns. The analog residue signal is converted by a poststage A/D converter 135 into an (m)-bit digital signal. Lastly, a data synthesizer 137 puts the high-order (n)-bit digital value and low-order (m)-bit digital value together to generate an (n+m)-bit digital value, and outputs the digital value.
