摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 1/4 wavelength plate which can be used for a projector having a powerful light source and which has a wide band region. SOLUTION: A first wavelength plate 2 and a second wavelength plate 3 using a material with double refractivity are stuck together so that respective optical axes may cross to obtain the wavelength plate 1 functioning as the 1/4 wavelength plate as a whole. The wavelength plate 1 is constituted so as to satisfy relations,Γ1≈180°×2×n1+180°andΓ2≈180°×n2+90°, when at a predetermined wavelengthλ, retardation of the first wavelength plate 2 toward an ordinary ray and an extraordinary ray isΓ1 and retardation of the second wavelength plate 3 toward the ordinary ray and the extraordinary ray isΓ2, and degrees of a high order mode are respectively an integer n1 and an integer n2.
