Organic compounds liable to deterioration arising from peroxide formation, namely, aldehydes, ethers, fatty oils comprising esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids, and petrols, are stabilized by adding from 0.001 to 1.0 per cent. of a compound obtained by reacting a phenol with a di-olefine selected from 2, 5-dimethyl-hexadiene-2, 4 and 2, 5-dimethylhexadiene-1, 5, e.g. 1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1, 1, 4, 4 - tetramethylbutene - 2, 1, 4 - di (p - hydroxyphenyl)-1, 1, 4, 4-tetramethylbutane, 1-(31, 41-dihydroxyphenyl)-1, 1, 4, 4-tetramethylbutene-2, or an ether having the formula C22H34O. The preparation of suitable stabilizers is described, (a) by condensing phenol with 2, 5-dimethylhexadiene-1, 5, (b) by condensing cresol with 2, 5-dimethylhexadiene-1, 5 and (c) by condensing cresol with 2, 5-dimethyl-hexadiene-2, 4, using a boron trifluoride-acetic acid catalyst in each case. In example (1) the stabilizing effect of 0.00033 mols. of 1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1, 1, 4, 4-tetramethyl-butene-2 and 1-(31, 41-dihydroxyphenyl)-1, 1, 4, 4-tetramethylbutene-2 on nonaldehyde is described. In a second example, the compound C22H34O, referred to above, is used to stabilize nonaldehyde.
