PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmission ratio variable steering device in which the generated noise associated with the operation of a locking mechanism is hardly perceived by a driver. SOLUTION: A VGRSECU 51 determines whether or not the absolute value of the rotational angleθp of a pinion gear 31 integrally rotated with a turning output shaft 13 is not less than the lock angleθ_lock in Step S13. It further determines whether or not, if the rotational angleθp is not less than the lock angleθ_lock, the absolute value of the steering angular velocityωs of a steering wheel 11 is not less than the lock steering angular velocityω_lock. If the steering angular velocityωs is not less than the lock steering angular velocityω_lock, an ECU 51 immediately shifts the lock mechanism 22 to the lock state in Step S15. Thus, generation timing of the lock sound associated with the shift to the lock state can be substantially simultaneous with that of the end-hitting sound associated with the stop by mechanical stoppers of right and left front wheels FW1, FW2, and the lock sound is hardly recognized.
