PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stroke characteristic variable engine improved for reducing an average value of a sliding resistance loss in reciprocating motion of a piston. SOLUTION: This stroke characteristic variable engine changes a piston stroke by changing a second link motion restricting state, by connecting the piston 3 and a crankshaft 6 by first and second links 4 and 5. The connection center of the first link and the second link in the top dead center in the lowest compression ratio state or a maximum displacement state, and the connection center of the first link and the second link in the top dead center in the highest compression ratio state or a minimum displacement state, are positioned on both sides for sandwiching the motion center axis of a piston pin 10.
