An electrolytic cell comprising an electrolysis vessel (2) for receiving a liquid electrolyte (4) that fills the vessel (2) to a predetermined level, electrodes (3) for passing an electric current through the electrolyte (4), a vent (5) for allowing gases produced by the electrolytic process to leave the vessel (2) and an air inlet means (6) located substantially adjacent to the predetermined level (7) for directing air into the vessel (2) at a pred etermined rate.
