PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator device without a machine room enabling a reduction in the size (diameter) of a drive sheave to further save the space in a hoistway by solving problems caused when a wire rope of steel core structure is used as the main rope of an elevator. SOLUTION: This elevator device is so formed that a wire rope is wrapped around the drive sheave of a hoist in the hoistway, a car and a counterweight are suspended through the wire rope in the hoistway, and the car and the counterweight are lifted by the rotation of the drive sheave in the hoistway. The wire rope 1 comprises a steel core 3 formed by twisting wires of 0.014 to 0.26 mm<SP>2</SP>in cross section and 2000 N/mm<SP>2</SP>or higher in strength, strands 4 formed by twisting the wires having the cross section and strength within the range above and disposed on the outer periphery of the steel core 3, and a coating material 10 interposed to surround the steel core 3 between the steel core 3 and the strands 4 and formed by knitting synthetic fibers in a cylindrical shape.
