An anchoring device, for example a tent peg, having a shaft with a first end and a second end. The device being adapted at, or adjacent, the first end to allow it to be rotatably driven about a longitudinal axis of the shaft, for example having a hexagonal shaped head. The device also having at least one substantially flat blade connected to the shaft between the first end and the second end, or at the second end, the blade being oriented within a plane that is at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis. Such a device can be driven into the ground by rotating it using a handle or a power tool, the flat blade acting like an auger to draw the device into the ground.
