PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment agent with which uniform alignment of liquid crystals by the light irradiation can be effectively achieved and which has heat stability and high light resistance. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment agent contains a polymeric compound having, in the main chain thereof, at least one of the bonds represented by general formula (1) to (7); wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>independently represent hydrogen atom, an alkyl, a substituted alkyl, an allyl or a propargyl.
