The steel, which is capable of being hardened, has a carbon content in the range 0.3-0.8 wt%. It is Cf53 or C56E2. The heat treatment includes brief inductive tempering and inductive case hardening. Following inductive hardening, the blank cam is tempered. The cam is manufactured by cold deformation, especially cold forging or extrusion. Before deformation, the blank is heated to 200-500[deg] C. Hot forging or hot pressing is optionally employed, followed by controlled cooling. Before and/or after heat treatment, the blank cam is machined by cutting or grinding. Heat treatment and machining take place with the blank cams held together as a clamped pack.
