The machine has king rolls (1, 2), and a shaft bed formed between the rolls. A winding roller (3) overlies at the bed during winding of a material web, and a press roller (5) presses against a mantle of the winding roller. A pressing force of the press roller is controlled or regulated over a handle (7) corresponding to a diameter of the winding roller using a damping device. The handle is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder (9). Cylinder chambers of the cylinder are connected with damping units (19, 20) that are de-activated from reaching a preset diameter of the winding roller. An independent claim is also included for a method for winding a material web.
