<p>The glass-forming agent is a silica sol. Its solids content in the frit, comprises 5-60wt%. The glass-forming agent is a dissolved silica sol, formed from an alkaline- or alkaline earth silicate compound. The silica sol has a pH no less than 7. Its specific surface area is 100-330 m2>/g. The water content is 50-70wt%. A proportion of quartz silica is included; its proportion is below that required to form the enamel. It is preferably 50-70wt% of this value. It is alternatively 0.01-0.1wt% of this value. Further additives or suspension agents such as alumina, bentonite, clay, a boron compound, feldspar, fluorspar, kaolin, silica, titania or P2O5 are included. An adhesive oxide is included. The silica sol is a single dispersant or solvent for the composition. The enamel so composed, is a fired frit on a metallic substrate.
