A method and system are disclosed for the playing of sounds from one or more sample-based or synthesizer-based instruments that are mapped to a single virtual instrument keyboard in such a manner that the range, sounded pitch, and other characteristics of each such remapped instrument are separately adjustable. Each remapped instrument is addressed on its own MIDI port and channel (or by use of an equivalent addressing scheme).
