PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can optimize a transition period without causing a user to perform complicated tasks (setup for transition periods to a plurality of energy saving modes, etc.) and can improve energy saving.

SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus optimizes the transition period to the energy saving mode by storing state transition between a stand-by mode and the energy saving mode and studying how often it is used and the content of usage.
