<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for longitudinally orienting a thermoplastic resin film, which prevents the formation of wrinkles and scuff when the thermoplastic resin film is longitudinally oriented and which can bring about a desired retardation, and to provide a longitudinally oriented film manufactured by the method. <P>SOLUTION: In this method for longitudinally orienting the method for longitudinally orienting the thermoplastic resin film, the thermoplastic resin film is longitudinally oriented by being pulled by a difference between the peripheral velocities of a pair of rollers 34a and 36a. The temperature of the inside of a heating furnace 32, which is interposed amidst the pair of rollers 34a and 36a, is set to be in the range of Tg+50°C to Tg+140°C. In this case, Tg represents the glass-transition temperature of the thermoplastic resin film 12.
