PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a pole layer having a desired shape to be formed with accuracy, and to reduce the difference between a physical track width and an effective track width.
SOLUTION: A magnetic head comprises: an encasing layer 12 having a groove; a nonmagnetic metal layer 13 that has a sidewall located directly above an edge of the groove and that is disposed on the encasing layer 12 at a position away from a medium facing surface; side shield layers 14A, 14B that have sidewalls located directly above an edge of the groove and that are disposed adjacent to the nonmagnetic metal layer 13 on the encasing layer 12 at a position closer to the medium facing surface than the nonmagnetic metal layer 13; and the pole layer 17. The pole layer 17 is accommodated in an encasing section 40 formed of the groove of the encasing layer 12, the sidewall of the nonmagnetic metal layer 13, and the sidewalls of the side shield layers 14A, 14B. The side shield layers 14A, 14B have end faces located in the medium facing surface on both sides of the end face of the pole layer 17, in the direction of track width.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
|
