PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treatment medium which extends a service life while preventing the deterioration of roughening treatment ability of the surface treatment medium for providing roughening treatment on the outer surface of an object to be treated using an electromagnetic force. SOLUTION: In the surface treatment medium for performing roughing treatment on the outer surface of the object 132 to be treated, the surface treatment medium A is made of a wire material 65 formed of a cylindrical shape short wire composed of a magnetic body, and the wire material 65 has one or two or more groove 65b provided circumferentially in the vicinity of both the ends T1, T2. The groove 65b is preferably provided at the same pitch from both end surfaces of wire material, and is provided with the same groove width. The plurality of and same number of grooves 65b are preferably provided in the vicinity of both the ends T1, T2 of the wire material 65.
