PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device whose image information is observed with excellent image quality by reducing the loss of an illumination light amount, while miniaturizing the whole of a device. SOLUTION: The image display device has: a reflection type image display means; an illuminating means for illuminating the image display means; an illuminating optical system for guiding light from the illuminating means to the image display means; and a display optical system for guiding the light from the image display means to the side of an observer. In the image display device, the illuminating means performs illumination so that the brightness of the maximum peripheral image height on the far side from the optical surface of the image display means is higher than that on the near side from the optical surface, in a local generatrix cross section.
