In a single-carrier frequency-division wireless communication a transmitter adapts a modulation scheme applied to a transmission signal system. The method of adapting the modulation scheme comprises: receiving (S1) at the transmitter N symbols to be transmitted using the transmission signal, where N is a natural number greater than or equal to 1, and, for each of a plurality of available modulation schemes, determining (S2) a constellation point of the or each symbol if the modulation scheme concerned is applied to transmit the symbol; for each of the plurality of available modulation schemes, producing (S3), based on the determined constellation point(s), at least one measure of an expected transmission performance if the available modulation scheme is applied to the transmission signal when transmitting the N symbols; selecting (S4) one of the available modulation schemes based on the or at least one measure; and transmitting the N symbols using the transmission signal whilst applying thereto the selected modulation scheme. Such an adaptive method can provide worthwhile improvements in the transmission performance without a significant processing burden.
