An image forming apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to offer a reference value in response to a fixing unit blocking temperature by each driving mode by hardware to control the temperature of the fixing unit, thereby preventing the fixing unit. A switching unit(150) provides driving power to a fixing unit(160) in response to a switching signal so as for the fixing unit to be heated. A controller(120) controls the fixing unit so that the temperature of the fixing unit can be formed within a preset heat-resistant temperature. An error detector(170) detects the abnormal operation of the controller. An engine controller(130) controls the temperature formation of the fixing unit on the basis of a preset target temperature and a fixing unit blocking temperature by the driving mode of the fixing unit if the abnormal operation of the controller is detected. A fixing temperature controller(140) outputs the switching signal based on a control signal outputted from the engine controller.
