A vehicle audio system and a method for controlling the same are provided to promote safe driving by sensing movement of a driver using a movement sensor and controlling the vehicle in accordance with the sensed movement. A method for controlling a vehicle audio system comprises the steps: sensing movement of a driver using a movement sensor installed at the vehicle audio system(S100); converting the sensed movement of the driver into a digital signal(S110); controlling the vehicle audio system according to a control signal designated in the digital signal(S120); stopping sensing movement according to request of the driver(S140); and controlling the vehicle audio system according to key input(S150).
