Biphenyl derivatives having specific structures represented by the general formula (I); a long-life organic electroluminescent (EL) device comprising a cathode, an anode, and an organic thin film lying between both which is composed of one or more layers including at least one luminescent layer, wherein at least one of the layers contains one or more of the biphenyl derivatives; and biphenyl derivatives favorably usable as the luminescent material in the device: (I) wherein Ar 1 and Ar2 are each an at least tricyclic fused aromatic hydrocarbon group; and Ar3 is phenyl or an at least bicyclic fused aromatic hydrocarbon group, with the proviso that when any of Ar1 to Ar3 is anthracen-9-yl, no hydrogen atom attaches to the 10-position carbon of the anthracene. ® KIPO & WIPO 2008 |
