A process for producing an alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid which comprises oxidizing an olefin or alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehyde in a liquid phase in the presence of a noble-metal catalyst. The process can ensure operational safety in stopping the reaction and prevent the noble-metal catalyst from deteriorating. The process, which is for producing analpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid by oxidizing an olefin or alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehyde in a liquid phase in the presence of a noble-metal catalyst in a reactor, includes a stoppage step in which an inert gas is supplied to the reactor to stop the oxidation reaction.
