An apparatus and a method for controlling the output of a light source are provided to divide indexes for generating the minimum or maximum output amount of light into n, detect the output amount of light of each of RGB light sources in each of the n index, calculate the brightness percent of the each index, and supply a predetermined amount of a current to each of the RGB light sources according to the brightness percent, thereby displaying the entire brightness of an image in the maximum brightness percent while maintaining a first set white balance. An RGB(Red, Green, Blue) light source(108) emits RGB lights. A memory(102) stores a percent light intensity index according to RGB light sources in a lookup table type. The percent light intensity index by light source controls the entire brightness of an image by percent on the basis of the maximum brightness according to the entire brightness variation of the image. A light source output control unit(104) receives the percent light intensity index by light source from the memory and supplies a predetermined amount of a current to a light source driver(106) according to the brightness percent of the image. The light source driver drives each of the RGB light sources with the amount of the current supplied from the light source output control unit.
