A method for cooling an electronic control unit (102, fig 1) of a vehicle having a climate control system (105) comprising a first operating condition whereby the climate control system (105) in accordance with a climate control setting is defined by a passenger (customer based climate control setting) and a second operating condition including overriding the passenger set climate control setting when an over temperature condition of the electronic control unit is reached. The climate control setting defined by a passenger may include a recirculation mode 410, which may be disabled and vent openings (114) are adjusted and adjustment of a fan (112) speed 416. The over temperature condition may be the exceeding of a first threshold temperature whereby the vents (114) are opened and fan (112) speed increased and a second threshold temperature where the fan (112) speed is increased. The system may reduce heat in the ECU that is generated by piezo-electric actuators of multiple fuel injections per cycle by combining the number of injections (figs 7 - 8I). The ECU may be an engine control unit and the second condition may include at least one high engine speed and high engine load. Temperature of the ECU may be recorded or calculated.
